Tenth Anniversary of Trainspotting: The Play

Manchester’s Lowry Theatre is putting on Harry Gibson’s stage adaptation of Trainspotting in May 2006, marking the 10th anniversary of the play’s debut. Here’s what their website says:

TRAINSPOTTING – Mon 27th March to Sat 1st April 2006
10th Anniversary production. It’s back, the play that shocked the nineties! The shockingly funny cult play that inspired the sensational movie returns to the stage. Friends Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie, embark on a horrific journey to the heart of a hell-hole world peopled by psychos, junkies, wide-boys and no-hopers. Hilarious but harrowing, Trainspotting charts the disintegration of their friendship as they hurtle towards self-destruction on a drug fuelled roller coaster ride through the streets, pubs and darkest recesses of Edinburgh low-life. Contains strong language and nudity. Most suitable for ages 16+.

Tickets are already available from Ticketmaster.

A long time ago, I interviewed Harry Gibson over the phone when the debut production of Trainspotting played in Brighton in 1996. Christ, I feel old. Still, it has the best ending to any interview I’ve done. See for yourself.

The script of the stage version of Trainspotting is available in the book 4Play, along with Gibson’s other theatre adaptations of Welsh’s novels. 4Play is not available in the USA and is out of print in the UK, though you can find it on Amazon Marketplace and other secondhand bookstores.
